CREATING MULTIPLE MODERN FACILITIES AT ICON MANCHESTER

The 11.6-acre site, adjacent to Manchester Airport and World Freight Terminal, is a joint venture between Stoford Developments Ltd and TPG Real Estate. The location presents two main challenges; a jet fuel line, feeding the airport, passes through the site so we had to mitigate the high risks by installing a concrete protection slab over its full length. Furthermore, restrictions on working at height are in place due to flying aircraft and, in a similar way to how we are delivering multiple projects next to East Midlands Airport, we have built an excellent relationship with Manchester Airport. The maximum haunch height of the four warehouses is 20m and a five-storey car park reaches 17m high so we have liaised closely regarding the usage of multiple cranes.

Matt Percival, Project Manager

“I’ve worked on all of the buildings at ICON. Seeing any multi-facility site through to the end is not only personally very satisfying, but also this type of stability and continuity is important to our clients. Furthermore, having in-depth knowledge of previous site challenges and therefore having solutions already at my fingertips has really helped to achieve the most efficient delivery methods. For example, pre-planning lifting operations and working with the maximum crane jib height of 38m remained crucially important due to the proximity of the airport, but it changed from requiring great attention to something that became undemanding and part of the day-to-day.”
