WE’RE STILL DOING IT RIGHT... BUT WITH HIGHER EXPECTATIONS
Our Doing It Right (DIR) cultural change programme, which was launched in 2020 has witnessed countless successes, which you may have read about in previous issues of Winvic Word. Nevertheless, such health and safety programmes usually take 5 years to holistically embed and as we are committed to continuous improvement, we made some changes to uphold the programme's momentum and effectiveness, to ensure it remains as robust as when initially launched.
Doing It Right has always been operationally led with support from the HSEQ department, but now it’s our sector leaders who have taken ownership of our culture to drive even higher safety expectations. The three Managing Directors of Industrial, Multi-room and Civils and Infrastructure – Danny Nelson, Mark Jones and Rob Cook – and our HSEQ Director Ian Goodhead, will lead the way alongside Millie Nimmo, Marketing Campaigns and Content Manager. The Directors will provide an element of top-down direction, but more importantly, they will ensure everyone in the business has a voice by bringing opinions and insights directly from the people working on the projects to the forum.
The group will continue to spearhead our impactful Doing It Right messaging and communications activity – read more about our latest campaign below – and it is now our Managing Directors who deliver the important focused campaign briefings and set expectations directly to our project managers.

Danny Nelson, Mark Jones and Rob Cook, Winvic Managing Directors’ commitment to Doing It Right
“We are committed to empowering the teams within our sectors and across the business to prioritise our Doing It Right ethos. Focusing on health, safety, quality, the environment, and the wellbeing of our workforce will ensure Winvic is a happy, safe and inclusive place to work. We will lead the changes necessary throughout the business to keep our people safe and our projects delivered to the highest standard of quality. We will promote good practices and behaviour at all times, and encourage Winvic staff and our supply chain to contribute to ensuring everyone stays safe and feels respected.”
PLEDGING ONGOING COMMITMENT AT FIRST DIR CONFERENCE
This renewed approach to leadership and the cascade of information was welcomed by all at our very first Doing It Right (DIR) Conference. The team’s commitments to a culture of safety-first construction were rejuvenated after hearing from our Managing Directors of Industrial, Multi-room and Civils and Infrastructure about how “Doing It Right is not just about following safety protocols. It’s making the right decision, from design to operations, so that everyone goes home safely.” Industrial and Multi-room team members who came together on 6 and 7 March and Civils and Infrastructure on the 18 March also heard from a leading defence lawyer in the corporate safety arena.
She spoke about the benefits to the business and individuals of applying a Doing It Right mentality, as well as the consequences of not doing so.

MAKING SURE EVERYONE’S SOMEONE GOES HOME SAFELY
The multiple Doing It Right campaigns that we’ve launched across the business have each arisen from data; we identify specific challenges and then strategically focus on improving safe behaviours. For example, our Underground Understood campaign achieved a 25 per cent overall reduction in service strikes in 2023 across our industrial sector and 78 per cent in cable strikes. We utilise memorable examples, emotive tactics and impactful training experiences to make people think twice and consider the potential catastrophic outcomes, which could occur as a result of unthinking or unsafe behaviour. Our latest ‘Someone’s’ campaign takes a broader approach and dials into the bottom-line reason why people must act safely – we want everyone to go home that day. To amplify the message and create an even greater impact with many operatives, the CEOs from five of our subcontractors partnered with us and were pictured on the campaign signage.

ASKING OUR PEOPLE TO ASSESS OUR SAFETY CULTURE WITH HSE TOOL
The various good and bad observations which have been reported though our app help us to focus the directions of our safety campaigns as featured above. But it was also our Health and Safety Orientated Behaviours 2023 score in the HSE Safety Climate Tool, which drove us to create the impactful ‘Someone’s’ campaign. After adopting the HSE Safety Climate Tool in 2023 to help us to measure our culture and compare our results against industry benchmarks, we distributed an anonymous questionnaire covering eight safety categories to over 700 team members. The HSE Safety Climate Tool is providing us with valuable year-on-year data to analyse and guide our Doing It Right strategy. We are proud that these improvements are significant and we’re looking forward to seeing how this year’s ‘Someone’s’ campaign alongside our other initiatives affect our 2025 scores.

A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH ALCUMUS SAFE CONTRACTOR
We partnered with Alcumus in developing our Doing It Right observation app and we’re collaborating with them again to manage our supply chain pre-qualification process, ensuring we continue the highest standard of compliance within our supply chain. We have traditionally undertaken all HSEQ policies, financials and insurance checks internally, but now Alcumus will provide total supply chain coverage of compliance on our behalf. A large number of our supply chain were already members of the Alcumus Safe Contractor scheme, and we’re delighted that the new process, which began in March 2024, has resulted in all of our subcontractor partners now being accredited.

Ian Goodhead, HSEQ Director
“Winvic’s approach to Health, Safety and Wellbeing has always been viewed as an ongoing journey, where we haven’t hesitated to adapt, transform and revolutionise to ensure everybody goes home safely at the end of each day. Our latest Doing It Right campaign, which echoes that goal, has been hard hitting and I’m proud of our many achievements since our cultural change programme was launched. Furthermore, the HSE Safety Climate Tool is providing us with valuable year-on-year data to analyse and guide our strategy and achieving top five per cent rankings in seven categories and top 10 in the other is verification that we are Doing It Right.”
