DOING IT RIGHT FOR OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER

In May 2020, after months of review work behind the scenes, Winvic proudly launched its ‘Doing It Right’ initiative, a new cultural change programme to further improve behavioural safety. The key working group comprised people at every level within Winvic; visits to many different sites took place and countless interviews with staff and subcontractors were undertaken to understand motives for behaviours. Findings revealed that while Winvic’s health and safety technical processes and training was viewed as excellent, continued and strengthened ‘one team’ working, and a refreshed commitment from all could be transformational.

Those we spoke to said our inclusive ‘one team’ approach to relationships is both valued and valuable, and the collective belief in ‘The Winvic Way’ sets us apart from other main contractors. Nevertheless, by resetting the bar for consistent health and safety behavioural standards across the entire business we would be able to build on the solid platform of our past to ensure a safe and successful future. The ‘Doing It Right’ initiative therefore isn’t it a new dictate to our supply chain and staff, but instead it can be seen as a renewed pledge by every person to simply do the right thing. The revitalised commitment from Winvic comprises the implementation of a new site induction process, new tools for reporting safety observations and a new set of minimum standards. Simply put, the three clear pillars of support are:

  • Consistent expectations of clear minimum safety standards;
  • Motivation to have good safety behaviours, including consequences for poor actions;
  • Measurement of outcomes to facilitate learnings, which will drive ever higher standards.

From holding the correct CSCS card or equivalent and wearing appropriate PPE to having personal responsibility for hazard awareness and reporting discrepancies, we want to ensure no stone can be left unturned. This means we also embrace the magnitude of people’s mental health, wellbeing and personal condition of health – including the continued coronavirus threat – and we’re particularly proud that our full workforce is given one hour of mental health awareness training. Thanks to our amazing team we’re looking after ourselves and each other by ‘Doing It Right’.

12 MONTHS ON…

It’s now a year since we launched our cultural change programme and it has undoubtedly improved behavioural safety across the board at Winvic. Over 5,000 observations – both positive and negative – have been reported in our ‘Doing It Right’ app over the last 12-months and we are delighted that we achieved our target to reduce our Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) by 25 per cent. We couldn’t have done it without the support and engagement from all our teams, clients and subcontractors – thank you everyone!

Dave Ward, Managing Director

“Even though Winvic’s health and safety record was already outstanding, ongoing excellence was our driver at the start of 2020 we started to undertake a vast programme of consultation and learning, from the bottom up, with the aim of effecting transformed behavioural thinking and behind-the-scenes methodology. By teaching our workforce to create different behaviours in themselves and, crucially, to act as a conscience to others we will continue to enhance our safety-first focus. We want to reset the bar for health and safety behavioural standards across the entire business, building on the solid platform of the past, to ensure a safe and successful future.”

Steve Young, Site Manager

“Health, safety and wellbeing have always been high on Winvic’s agenda and I think ‘Doing It Right’ is a perfect example of how Winvic is always trying to up its game, striving for no incidents and accidents, and it also shows how important Winvic takes inclusivity – every subcontractor is just as important as an internal staff member. I have personally found our app very useful and we’ve really been encouraged to report on good actions as well as describing near misses and issues. This positive support has definitely made a difference and it’s nice to hear about the people who are championing best practice.”
